We continue our summer series entitled, “Cultivating Character.” Character is a word seldom used in the Bible and we don’t see it very often in the media. But we know what it means and immediately recognize its absence.
We are using this definition of character… “Character is what you do when no one is looking… character is who you are.” We look at “discipline” as a character quality in a message entitled,“Discipline: First Things First.”

The key passage for this message is found in Hebrews 12:10b-11 (NIV)

“God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in His holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace…”

Discipline from God is an indication that He really loves and cares for us. If He didn’t care, He wouldn’t bother to discipline us! The result of discipline that God is seeking is… “That we may share in His holiness.”

We also look at how this character trait of “discipline” can grow and change our lives. The message will focus on how to understand, practice and maintain discipline in our relationship with ourselves, others and with God.

Discipline is how you learn to put first things first. Which area of your life most needs discipline? When are you going to take the first step? You will discover how to do that in this message. The rewards of a disciplined life are enormous! They’re within your reach if you will make the effort.
