This week, our “Cultivating Character” summer series continues with a message entitled, “Learning The Secrets of Contentment.” The key scripture comes from Philippians 4:12 (NIV) where Paul says…
“I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.”
Notice his phrase, “I have learned the secret of being content.” Contentment is something that you learn and relearn. It is not a personality trait that only a few have, but a learned character trait for all of us.
God wants to teach us contentment. So, how do you think He’s going to teach us? Do you think He will teach us contentment by giving us everything we want… when we want it? No!
Paul says here that God teaches us contentment by the ups and downs of life. Some lessons are best learned from personal experience. This is true with the character trait of contentment.
