This is the second of four Sundays in Advent. Advent is a Latin word that means “coming.” This refers to the coming of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, to our world at Christmas. In thinking about these four Sundays of Advent, I decided early on to devote this day to looking at Joseph and his contribution to the birth and upbringing of Jesus the Messiah.
Whenever you see Joseph speaking in a Christmas play you know they imagined the dialogue because he never says anything in the Bible. However, his legacy is one of loving obedience to God. Jesus gave this qualification for love in John 14:15 (NLT),
“If you love Me, obey My commandments.”
This implies that love is empty without obedience!
Despite his forgettable silence, Joseph loved God and remained faithful to all God’s direction. He lovingly fulfills the roles of husband, father, provider and protector. Joseph models a close walk with God! When Christmas came to Bethlehem, Joseph of Nazareth found a purpose for his life within the greater purposes of God. As a result, we can learn much about love and obedience from him today.
Join us as we view the first Christmas through Joseph’s eyes in a message entitled, “The Reason Is Love.”
